Sometimes keeping the 9 to 5 job is ok

posted by Russ | June 24 | 1 Comment

I know this seems unlikely advice, especially coming from someone who’s made a clear intention to leave the office job in the (hopefully) forseeable future. While I am certainly not suggesting that you settle for an office job if it’s not what you want, I do think that marching into your boss’ office quitting is equally inadvisable. There is plenty of advice out there from self employed entrepeneurs and other free spirited creative types that says there is no better time than now to quit; that if you’re not following your heart, you should start doing so today. But sometimes a little prudence may be called for.

That said, what you should start doing today is thinking about what you want and where you would like to get to.

But for the time being, if you still have your day job, don’t despair. Not every unhappy employee out there is young and […]

One Hundred Pushups – The Challenge

posted by Russ | June 15 | 1 Comment

A while back I had heard of a web site called one hundred pushups. The site is really just a 6 week program designed to get anyone to a point where they can do 100 consecutive push ups. Right away I was interested, and my immediate thought was “There’s no way I can do this! But I’d sure like to try!” I started the program immediately and made it one week, and then fizzled out.

Fast forward about a year, and once again this one hundred pushup challenge has been brought into my world via the wonderful world of Twitter. So naturally, when I was reminded of it, I knew it was a sign that I should start up again, and get ready to knock out 100 pushups.

Since the program is designed for everyone, beginners to advanced, you take an initial test and pending those results, it tells you […]

I didn’t attend the World Domination Summit, but I should have.

posted by Russ | June 8 | 11 Comments

I had heard about the World Domination Summit that Chris Guillebeau and Co. were putting on many months back, but sort of just dismissed it.

In case you happen to be unfamiliar with Chris or the WDS, let me explain before I continue. The tagline for event, which just happens to be the coolest and most thought provoking description for an event that I’ve ever heard, is this:

In the face of overwhelming pressure to conform, how do we live a remarkable life in a conventional world?

As if you need to know more after reading that, here’s more from the WDS site:

The World Domination Summit is no ordinary event. It’s not a retreat and it’s not a business mixer. And most of all, it’s definitely not a convention. It’s an unconvention. The summit takes place in an art museum, a park, an independent bookstore, and all over the unconventional city of […]

Why deadlines are a waste of time

posted by Russ | June 6 | Add a Comment

In most companies, and in the world in general, there is a pretty big focus on deadlines. Personally, I think setting deadlines is a waste of time and only serves to create an environment where subpar performance is normal and incomplete or rushed final products are acceptable.

For the sake of argument, assume I’m talking about a corporate environment where someone is expected to work 40 hours per week. If a worker is a good, honest, and hardworking person, they will work on their task at a pace comfortable to them and it will be completed in a reasonable amount of time, at which point the final product would theorectically be at the level expected when tasking it.

If a deadline is set or agreed upon ahead of time, really it’s all based on assumption. And if it turns out that something unexpected comes up and the deadline is too short, in […]

Thoughts one month after completing 21 day raw food cleanse

posted by Russ | May 27 | Add a Comment

It’s amazing that a month has already gone by since we completed our 21 day raw food cleanse. Now that we’re back to “normal”, I wanted to share my thoughts on raw vegan diets, after my intensive experience with raw eating.

First of all, I should say that the raw cleanse was a success. And as I’ve shared my experience with several people (in the real world, not online), the question most frequently asked is “How was it? How did you feel?”, and it’s something that’s hard to answer to people who eat SAD (Standard American Diet) food. But I think I’ve finally found a way to describe it.

What I now say when asked about eating raw is that it’s not so much that I felt great while following a raw diet, instead, the raw experience is the absence of feeling bad.

I know that sounds silly, but really it’s true. […]

Koh Phangan after New Years

Relaxing in Koh Phangan after New Years

Relaxing in Koh Phangan after New Years

After a fun night at the New Year’s Full Moon Party, we finally decided to call it quits around 2AM. We weren’t sure how we were going to get back to the other side of the island, but we had a hunch we may be able to catch a ride with the truck that had dropped us off. From our hotel, they were doing runs to Haad Rin every hour until 1 or 1:30 to drop people off, and we hoped we’d see the truck and be able to catch a lift back to the hotel, and save us the trouble of finding a ride. From Haad Rin back to to the Haad Tian Resort it was a […]

Thoughts on Day 21 of raw food cleanse

posted by Russ | May 1 | 3 Comments

As previously posted, my girlfriend fiance and I have been doing a raw food cleanse. Well, today is Day 21, the final day. We have experimented with raw in the past, and typically enjoy a mostly vegan diet, though we do indulge in non-vegan and cooked foods with some regularity, but try to keep our center with lots of veggies and organic foods. I had noted that my goals were to “clear my head a bit, get more internal creativity flowing, and to re-kickstart my running and working out.” I suppose in some ways I’ve succeeded, but in others not so much.

From a health standpoint, it has been a success, and I’ve felt great all 3 weeks. I didn’t have the creative energy boost that I had hoped for, but that may be something longer term, or maybe I just poured all my energy into work and didn’t leave enough […]

21 Day Raw Food Cleanse

posted by Russ | April 10 | 8 Comments
Update: I no longer endorse The Garden Diet as a raw food program, as I believe they are not running a legitimate business and are funding their lives by taking affiliate sales and not paying their commissions. I have been directing sales to them via their e-junkie affiliate program for several years, and to date I have several unpaid commissions going back nearly a year. I have followed all the proper channels to contact Jinjee, and though many requests went unanswered, I was able to get ahold of her on several occassions asking what is going on. I have FOUR emails from her over the course of 8 months explaining why they can not pay, but claiming they will pay soon, which of course has not happened. I understand maybe a month of two delay, however at this point I believe that they have no intention of paying, while […]
