Some vacation memories before my next one

Friday, February 27th, 2009I have recently posted some photos (here, here, and here) I took of graffiti while in Spain (which seem to be very popular according to Google Images), so here is yet another. This one was taken in Tarifa, Spain, which is at the southern tip of the country. From the location where this photo was taken, you can see Morocco and Africa in the distance across the Strait of Gibraltar, and to the west is the Atlantic Ocean, and to the east is Mediterranean. The graffiti isn’t what makes this picture for me, it is really the location that makes this one special. Both of these photos were taken around the same time, but with different camera settings.

Two days in Granada, Spain

View from hotel looking up to la Alhambra
Granada is a beautiful city, and there is plenty to see and do there. Of course visiting la Alhambra is necessary, but there is quite a bit of other sightseeing to do as well. I was able to see pretty much la Alhambra in its entirety in one day, but it involved a lot of walking. If you are willing to walk it is even accessible by foot from the city. From the main plaza in town you can just walk up the hill for probably 20 minutes or so and you are there. A day in Tangier, Morocco

During my trip to Spain, one of the things that I wanted to do was a day trip to Morocco. I had really wanted to make a few days of it and head to Rabat and Marrakesh, but I didn’t have the time so I stuck with the day trip. I had also heard good things about Tarifa, Spain, so after my stay in Granada I went to Tarifa where I was able to get a fast ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar into Tangier. “Que Calor?” Graffiti, Córdoba, Spain
Tuesday, January 20th, 2009Here is yet another installment to my album of graffiti photos. This one was taken in Córdoba, Spain during my trip in October 2008. I found this on either Calle San Fernando or Calle San Feria, I’m not sure which, as I was walking from my room at the nearby Hostal Maestre. I’m not sure if the art is referring to global warming or what, but regardless, I thought it was interesting and the fact that it made me think was nice too.
Córdoba was a lovely city, and I would highly recommend a visit there. The Hostal Maestre is also recommended, it’s a little further from the city center, but that gives ample opportunity to get lost in the maze of streets. It’s also right around the corner from a proper hostel which has cheap internet access. Enjoy!

Since writing this article I’ve also taken the Amtrak from San Diego to Portland
DECEMBER – Most people I knew at work thought I was crazy to take a trip like this, but I had a good time and would still do it again, though making a few changes.
The trip was by Amtrak, and originated in San Diego (Santa Fe Depot) with the final destination being New York City. I took the Pacific Surfliner from San Diego to Los Angeles, then the Southwest Chief from LA to Chicago, and finally the Lake Shore Limited from Chicago to Penn Station in New York City. Budget and packing for 10 days in Spain

To the right is a picture of what I packed for 10 days in Spain, and actually there are quite a few things there that I didn’t end up using. Some I would bring again since they were precautionary, but others I would scrap.
In case you can’t see the picture, here is my packing list and what I brought for my trip to Spain:
Clothes – 2 pairs shoes (sneakers and “nicer” sketchers), 3 t-shirts, 1 pair jeans, 2 pairs shorts, 1 button up short sleeve shir, 1 plain heavy-ish long sleeve shirt, 1 zip up sweatshirt, 5 pair underwear, 5 socks, windbreaker, swimming trunks
Toiletries – razor, contacts, toothbrush, etc, Dr Bronners soap (for bathing, washing clothes, shampooing), emergency toilet paper roll
Books – Spanish/Morocco guides, Spanish, Arabic phrase books, 2 reading books

Barcelona to Cordoba by Train – Spain Travel

My next stop after Barcelona was Cordoba. I knew that there were a few different trains that ran between the cities, one being the faster and more expensive AVE. I decided to take the longer, cheaper, overnight train. To book my ticket, I just went to the station one day early to make my reservation. I would recommend doing that rather than trying to figure out the online system. There was a train that left at night and was supposed to arrive the next morning at 7AM. It actually ended up arriving four hours late due to major rain, but it worked out just fine as it put my in Cordoba at a perfect time to look for my next hotel.
