Somali Pirates

I have read a couple articles recently which actually don’t paint the modern day Somali pirates in a negative light, and wanted to share this one that I’ve most recently read. And no, it’s not about defending their actions or what they are doing, but it certainly paints a picture which is different from that which we read in the press.

So go and read the article and let me know what you think.

If you don’t want to read this article, basically what it says is that since the collapse of the Somali government, the lack of oversight in the area is now being exploited by first world countries. Specifically by dumping waste and over fishing the areas that are around Somalia. Hopefully they’re not doing these two things in the same place because that would […]

Should the United States Legalize Drugs?

posted by Russ | April 9 | 2 Comments

I came across this commentary article on CNN couple weeks ago about the legalization of drugs and figured I’d share a few thoughts I have.

First of all, I truly believe that our “war on drugs” doesn’t work. Just because something is illegal does not mean people don’t do it. Look around, people do illegal things every day. And trust me, same goes for drugs, I was in college once upon a time. And I also don’t buy the fact that making drugs legal will increase their usage. Drugs are easy to get and people who want them get them.

Secondly, though I don’t think drugs are in any way a good thing, I sort of believe that what people choose to do in their own time is their own business. Granted, hard core drug users can cause other problems that don’t stay in their home, […]

Road sign you do not want to see

Thanks to Brave New Traveler for the laugh today. I got a kick out of this and as much as it seems interesting, they are probably right, I don’t want to see that sign.

Obamas to Plant White House Vegetable Garden

posted by Russ | March 20 | Add a Comment

Thanks to Grace for alerting me to the fact that the Obamas are planting a vegetable garden at the White House!

I think this is great, it promotes self sustainability, local and healthy eating. Congrats to the Obama’s for doing this and setting a good example for the rest of us.

Some vacation memories before my next one

I have been pretty slow in posting the photos and write ups from my vacation last fall, and since it won’t happen this weekend since I’ll be in Colorado, I’ll leave you with a couple photos. See Cordoba, Spain and Tangier, Morocco below!

Graffiti with Strait of Gibraltar and Morocco in the distance

posted by Russ | February 27 | 3 Comments

I have recently posted some photos (here, here, and here) I took of graffiti while in Spain (which seem to be very popular according to Google Images), so here is yet another. This one was taken in Tarifa, Spain, which is at the southern tip of the country. From the location where this photo was taken, you can see Morocco and Africa in the distance across the Strait of Gibraltar, and to the west is the Atlantic Ocean, and to the east is Mediterranean. The graffiti isn’t what makes this picture for me, it is really the location that makes this one special. Both of these photos were taken around the same time, but with different camera settings.

How to find the job you love

posted by Russ | February 26 | 3 Comments

Disclaimer: I should preface this article by saying that I do not currently have the job I love. This is really an article based on my thoughts, and one that can hopefully one day help me.

The situation

Perfect hit - bullseye

The situation I seem to perpetually be in is one where my job is tolerable and pays decently with decent benefits, however I know that it is not the right place for me to be. In today’s economy, conventional wisdom seems to say you should stick with something that is decent, however I don’t necessarily agree with that. Sure, people are out of work and some would do anything for a job, but does that mean I have to tolerate something I don’t enjoy? I’m not talking about walking out on a job, I’m […]

Interesting – Most Expensive Keywords

posted by Russ | February 26 | 1 Comment

In typical internet fashion, I found one thing and followed a link, then followed another, then another, which somehow landed me a million miles away from where I started.

It all began when I finally decided to sign up for twitter. There are a select few bloggers who I follow regularly, so I decided I may as well follow their twitter too. I think they all use it properly and will not overwhelm me… So anyway, I’m reading Timothy Ferriss‘ latest Tweets and see one where he posted a list of the most expensive keywords. I have to say, while on the one hand I am quite surprised, on the other I am not shocked at all. I had figured the most expensive would be travel related or vacation related. But as it turns out some of the most expensive keywords are related […]
