Juice Fast Days 5, 6, 7
Monday, December 10th, 2012This was supposed to be a five day juice fast, but after Day 5 I was feeling good and decided to keep it going. I also did some reading to see if anyone else used bananas during juice fasting, and found out that using bananas during the fast slows cleansing and detoxing, I assume because of the fiber. This was part of the reason I decided to keep going beyond day 5, so I could do at least a couple days of straight juice and see if I noticed any difference.
I made it through the rest of Day 5 on just juice, then Day 6 just juice, and decided that after juice all day on Day 7 I would end my fast, at least for a few days, but will probably keep doing juice for a few meals. It’s not been that difficult to do this, but I’m ready to […]

Juice Fast – Days 2 & 3
Thursday, December 6th, 2012Still going strong. The headache problem stopped yesterday, so it seemed to only be the first day, from caffeine withdrawal, and then very minor yesterday. For the most part I’m not hungry and feeling satisfied. But I get moments of just wanting to give in and eat, or times where I feel really spacey and like I want to sit on the couch and be lazy. My focus will just leave for a minute or I’ll feel nauseous, but then I get up or have a sip of juice and I feel fine again. All in all, feeling great, just miss the eating.
On the 2nd night I slept hard, close to nine hours and woke up sore and groggy. I’m hoping tonight is better.
The only other thing that’s hard is that at home, eating is sort of a ritual for me and my fiance, when we are both home […]

Five day juice fast
Tuesday, December 4th, 2012After watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead a few weeks ago, and having since done a few intermittent days here and there of juicing, I attempted to start a 5 day juice f(e)ast this week. After lots of food experiments in the past, I’ve decided not to be overly rigid about sticking to it precisely, so I may snack here and there as necessary, but I think there will be a benefit regardless of how it turns out.
I’ve done extended raw food cleanses in the past, and have experimented with months of no dairy and no meat, and even months here and there of mostly vegan eating. But I’ve learned that food plays too critical of a place in my life to be rigid about how I eat. I know about the slippery slope of allowing cheats here and there when you’re trying to stay on a path, but I […]

Make raw milk yogurt at home in less than 30 minutes
Thursday, February 16th, 2012Making yogurt from raw milk
If you’re vegan or don’t eat dairy, this article may not be of interest to you. But if you’re a yogurt lover or want to try making a tasty, simple food at home, read on. You will be amazed at how easy it is to make fresh yogurt on your own. I made my first batch two weeks ago, and just finished making my second batch earlier today.
Typically I don’t eat much dairy, but when I found out how easy it could be to make yogurt at home, I became interested. And since I’ve learned about raw foods and the power of enzymes, I try to make sure that the milk and cheese I consume is raw, so it makes sense for me to make raw yogurt. Probiotics and enzymes! Luckily I have a food coop […]

The Scientification of Food
Tuesday, October 11th, 2011I have been unbelievably thrilled over the past few years to see people start paying attention to what they are eating again. I know obesity rates are still rising, but I am also seeing more organic products on shelves, more places carrying sustainably raised and cruelty free meats, and in general am starting to feel that people are getting more interested in going back to nature when it comes to eating.
And while I think it’s great for people to be learning what is in their food and learning about carbs, proteins, vitamins, and super foods, I still can’t help but feeling like people approach eating and being healthy a little bit too scientifically. Certainly it’s great to know how much Vitamin C is in an orange, that tomatoes are high in lycopene, and the benefits associated with eating garlic, ginger, or turmeric. But none of these things on their own […]

Thoughts one month after completing 21 day raw food cleanse
Friday, May 27th, 2011It’s amazing that a month has already gone by since we completed our 21 day raw food cleanse. Now that we’re back to “normal”, I wanted to share my thoughts on raw vegan diets, after my intensive experience with raw eating.
First of all, I should say that the raw cleanse was a success. And as I’ve shared my experience with several people (in the real world, not online), the question most frequently asked is “How was it? How did you feel?”, and it’s something that’s hard to answer to people who eat SAD (Standard American Diet) food. But I think I’ve finally found a way to describe it.
What I now say when asked about eating raw is that it’s not so much that I felt great while following a raw diet, instead, the raw experience is the absence of feeling bad.
I know that sounds silly, but really it’s true. […]

Thoughts on Day 21 of raw food cleanse
Sunday, May 1st, 2011As previously posted, my girlfriend fiance and I have been doing a raw food cleanse. Well, today is Day 21, the final day. We have experimented with raw in the past, and typically enjoy a mostly vegan diet, though we do indulge in non-vegan and cooked foods with some regularity, but try to keep our center with lots of veggies and organic foods. I had noted that my goals were to “clear my head a bit, get more internal creativity flowing, and to re-kickstart my running and working out.” I suppose in some ways I’ve succeeded, but in others not so much.
From a health standpoint, it has been a success, and I’ve felt great all 3 weeks. I didn’t have the creative energy boost that I had hoped for, but that may be something longer term, or maybe I just poured all my energy into work and didn’t leave enough […]
